The main body of this vessel is carved with a dragon in low relief a geometric background and the handle is decorated with the dragon’s tail. The top surface of this vessel decorated with seven archaic tao tie faces. The edge of the inside is carved with an inscription by the Qianlong Emperor, “Jade of He Tian was produced in the Yu River. The Mohammedans fished it out and paid it as tribute. There are places which cannot be reached; they are secluded and muddy for years. Jade by chance found there is like a precious gem and even surpasses the Han jade in comparison. It was not given to a common workman to engrave a new design but is decorated with a dragon’s tail cut and polished which differs not from that on a Han piece. High officials should write poems about it like bowl and ink stones. It does not contain Ling Lu for warning against good wine but will look lovely holding flowers which move to and fro like dancing. The thing has been made so as to bring out the quality of the material. Can we employ man in a like manner?
