<value>Jackfield ware was generally made for everyday use – such as tea-pots, kitchen ware, pitchers or drinking mugs – and is sometimes decorated underglaze with appliedreliefs or overglaze with enamels or gilt.</value>
</note>
<note>
<value>The inscription on this mug has a Jacobite allusion and is similar to inscriptions found on other pieces of Jackfield ware, a longer version being: ‘May all true gentlemen have a true steward [Steward = Stuart] and may the tenant be ready when the steward comes. God bless P.C. [Prince Charles] and down with the rump’ (see Rackham and Read). This suggests the mug was made in Shropshire, where there was strong support for the Jacobite call to restore the heirs of the Roman Catholic Stuart King James II to the throne. It was bought by Dr Glaisher, in 1915, along with a 4 inch piece of stained and painted glass with the initials I.W. and date 1653 (C.1106-1928), the two pieces were linked in the catalogue and the initials attributed to ‘Wainwright family’.</value>
</note>
<note>
<value>The lustrous black lead glaze identifies this as Jackfield ware. Named for Richard Thursfield and his son Maurice who produced such wares at their pottery in Jackfield, Shropshire, c.1713-1772, Jackfield was also produced by other potters in Shropshire and in Staffordshire. Thomas Whieldon, of Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent is credited producing an exceptionally shiny black glaze. Jackfield is also sometimes also known as jet ware, blackware or japanned ware (after Japanese black lacquer ware). It was particularly popular from c.1740-60 and again in the second half of the nineteenth century when Queen Victoria favoured black items in mourning for Prince Albert, who died in 1861.</value>
