  • Illuminated Manuscript. Binding, front cover and spine. Gospel Lectionary and Collectar. Parchment, 161 fols., 251 x 170 (150 x 116) mm, 17 – 18 long lines, ruled in plummet, neums (fols. 10v – 12r), red and white silk curtains extant on fols. 3v, 18v, 49v, 51v, 64r, traces of stitching above most other miniatures and initials. BINDING: twelfth century, red leather over thick wooden boards, sewn on 3 supports, traces of two clasps on lower cover, holes on upper cover left after removal of metal and jewelled ornaments. Southern Germany (Windberg), c. 1170-1180. CONTENTS: fols. 1v – 78r Gospel readings for the feast days of the combined Temporal and Sanctoral fols. 78r – 97r Gospel readings for the Common of Saints; fols. 97r – 99v Gospel readings for Masses of the Trinity, the Cross, the Virgin and the Dead; fols. 100r – 113r Collects for the combined Temporal and Sanctoral; fols. 113v – 152v Gospel readings for the Sundays of the year fols. 153r – 160r Collects for the Sundays of the year. DECORATION: Twelve full-page framed miniatures on gold grounds for major feast days: fol. 2r Annunciation; fol. 2v Nativity; fol. 3r Adoration of the Magi; fol. 3v Presentation in the Temple (for the Purification of the Virgin); fol. 18v Entry into Jerusalem; fol. 29v Entombment (for Good Friday); fol. 39r Resurrection; fol. 49v Ascension; fol. 51v Pentecost; fol. 64r Dormition of the Virgin; fol. 68v Nativity of the Virgin; fol. 77r Jacob’s dream of the heavenly ladder (for the Dedication of a Church, image inspired by the reference to Jacob’s ladder in the final verse of the processional hymn for that ceremony). ORNAMENTATION: Gold initials [2 – 8 ll.] formed of foliage, human figures, animals, birds on blue and green grounds; red initials [1 – 2 ll.]; capitals highlighted in red.
