Silver cup and cover, by Eustachius Hohmann

An image of Cup and cover. Traubenpokal. Hohmann, Eustachius (active 1587 to 1612, Germany, Nuremburg). Lobed ovoid body and cover supported by a stem in the shape of a tree trunk with figure of a woodman, snail, frog and tortoise. The circular foot is embossed with a band of gadroons. The highly domed centre supports a stem in the shape of a tree trunk climbed by a scythe-holding woodman, a frog, snail and tortoise. At the top and base of the stem are borders of silver acanthus leaves. The ovoid body and interlocking cover are embossed with lobes. The urn-shaped finial is surmounted by a silver bunch of flowers. Silver-gilt, raised body, embossed, cast stem, height, overall, 48.8 cm, diameter, overall, 11.4 cm, weight 913 g, circa 1587-1612. Mannerism.
