The style of painting is close to dishes decorated with a couple strolling in landscape with similar tall sponged trees. These have been associated with the name of a presumed decorator, John Bowen, because a dish (destroyed in the fire at the Alexandra Palace in 1873), decorated with a lady and gentleman in a landscape with a tree and cottage, was inscribed ‘ye 1st: Sept. 1761 Bowen.fecit’.’ It is not certain however, that this Bowen was the John Bowen apprenticed at the Lime Kiln lane pottery in 1734, and who, when
