Bodycolour and watercolour on cotton, height 675 mm, width 512 mm. Mogul School. Production Note: Formerly 'Indo-Persian, c. 1555-1579'. Notes: The Hamza Nama, a manuscript of the Dastan i-Amir Hamzah (an Islamic romance), was begun for the Emperor Humayun, and completed after his death in 1556 for his successor Akbar. It was illustrated by fifty artists working in the Imperial library first under the Persian master Mir Sayyid 'Ali, and later under a second Persian, 'Abd al-Samad. Other illustrations from this very large work are known as follows: 61 in the Museum für Kunst und Industrie, Vienna 25 in the Victoria and Albert Museum 5 in the British Museum 17 in various collections in the USA For further notes see the filing box.
