Chelsea Porcelain candlestick with Leda and the Swan

An image of Mythological candlestick. Candlestick with Leda and the Swan accompanied by Cupid. Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory, England, London. The concave underside is unglazed and has a large circular central ventilation hole. The roughly oval base is supported on four double scroll feet. The top of the front and sides are covered with applied flowers and leaves. At the back there is a tall tree with bocage of green leaves and clusters of small white flowers with blue centres. At the top it has a forward projection with a hole to take a candle socket. Leda sits in front of the tree with the swan standing close to her on the viewer's left, and Cupid standing on the right, stretching across to place his right hand on her left knee. Soft-paste porcelain, slip cast, with hand-modelled details, lead-glazed, and painted in greyish-blue, green, yellow, flesh pink, pink, puce, orange-red, pale grey, and black enamels, and gilt. Height, whole, 25.7 cm, width, across scroll feet, 16.2 cm, circa 1760-1770 (the date of manufacture may be around 1765). Rococo. Gold anchor period (1759-1769).
