Carolingian carved ivory plaque of Christ in Majesty

An image of Sculpture/Plaque. Christ in Majesty. Ivory plaque. Removed from the modern cover of a 10th Century Gospel Book (Ms McClean 19). Christ seated on a throne, blessing and holding an open book, is surrounded by an oval laurel wreath and a raised band of ornament. In the spandrels are the symbols of the Evangelists, except top left corner where St Matthew himself is seen writing in a book on a desk. The ground is gilt, probably modern. Production Place: Germany. Ivory, carved, height, whole, 15.3 cm, width, whole, 13.1 cm, depth, whole, 4.0 cm, circa 800 to 900. Carolingian.
