Jingo, by Yashima Gakutei

An image of Jingo. Gakutei, Yashima (Japanese, 1786(?)-1868). Surimono. Colour print from woodblocks, with metallic pigment and blind embossing. Early 1820s. Poetry by Bunseisha Harushige and Buntoen Edatomo. Circa 1820-circa 1823. Ukiyo-e. Notes: From the series of legendary heroines Katsushikaren gakumen fujin awase (Framed paintings of women for the Katsushika Group). Jingo (170-269) is always shown in the costume of a warrior. After the death of her husband the Emperor, she was inspired by the Deities to conquer Korea for Japan, and in order to delay the birth of her child until she had completed the task whe fastened a stone in her girdle. Returning triumphant to Japan, her son was born and she assumed the regency until he was of an age to become Emperor. She appointed the first ambassadors to China, and introduced the Chinese system of horsed posts on the great highways.
