The saucer has deep, curved sides, and stands on a footring with a suspension hole. Both pieces have a bleu lapis ground vermiculé d'or. The cup has an approximately semi-circular reserve on the front painted in polychrome with an infant holding a lyre and a laurel wreath, and sitting on a drapery amid clouds. The reserve has a scalloped gilt frame surrounded by a band of zig-zags. There are gold bands round the foot and rim, the latter dentilated on the interior; gold lines down the sides of the handle and on its back, three V shapes of graduated size each with five pendant leaves and two dots.The saucer has a central circular reserve painted in polychrome with a cupid holding an arrow, sitting amid couds. The reserve has a frame similar to that on the cup. There is a gold band round the rim, dentilated on the exterior. The putto or cherub holding the lyre and wreath is probably intended to be emblematic of Poetry (Poesie), as a putto in a different pose holding these attributes appears in prints of Boucher’s drawing La Poésie by G. Demarteau, L.-F. de La Rue, and G.L. Hertel after La Rue. A similar putto, with harp but not a wreath occupies a reserve on a covered cup in the British Museum (1948,12-3,47). This is probably a gobelet couvert of the first size (6.4 cm -7 cm) lacking its cover with a handle of Savill's shape C found on gobelet litron, with a saucer of the first size of Bouillard shape. Although the name indicates that a cover should accompany the cup, Savill noted that gobelets couvert sans couvert were listed immediately after gobelets couverts in the Biscuit Kiln register on 10 September 1755 (Institute de France, MS 5673, fol. 43 previously 48) When in Louis Clarke's collection, the painting was attributed to Sioux jeune, but the mark then thought to be his does no have a dot in the centre. Savill has suggested that it might be the mark of Gabriel Rousseau (see Documentation, Savill, 1988).
