Go, by Yashima Gakutei

An image of Go. Gakutei, Yashima (Japanese, 1786(?)-1868). Surimono. Colour print from woodblocks, with metallic pigment and blind embossing. c.1817. Poetry by Nandaro Shiretsuzumi and Madono Murachiku (at the age of 74), circa 1817. Ukiyo-e. Notes: Number two in a set of the four traditional accomplishments. The other accomplishments were koto, calligraphy and painting. Go, the Chinese game of Chi, was introduced into Japan in the eighth century by Kibi Daijin (the subject of another print in this exhibition) who played the game with the Chinese Emperor.
