An image of Illuminated Manuscript. Cutting. Leaf from an Antiphonal. Production Place: Germany, probably Cologne. Augustinian Use of the Order of the Holy Cross. Parchment, gold, 450 x 310 (345 x 209) mm, 10 lines of text ruled in faint brown ink and 10 four-line musical staves ruled in red ink, circa 1510 to circa 1520.
CONTENTS: Antiphon for the Nativity of the Virgin, Hec est regina virginum. DECORATION: Historiated initial [H, 2 ll.] formed of gold acanthus on blue ground, Virgin and Child in enclosed garden venerated by two brothers of the Order of the Holy Cross, bar-border with foliage and acanthus extensions, a putto, tournament scene, and bird with scroll inscribed ‘gelr hogen moit’. ORNAMENTATION: Alternate red and blue one-line penwork initials. Provenance: made for a house of the Order of the Holy Cross, probably St Cornelius at Roermond, Limburg.
