Illuminated manuscript. Book of hours, use of Rome, liturgical use. Masters of the Gold Scrolls (Bruges, c. 1420 - 1450). Parchment, iii parchment flyleaves + 146 fols. + i parchment flyleaf, 121 x 83 (70 x 44) mm, 15 long lines, ruled in red ink. BINDING: Eighteenth century, red velvet over wooden boards. CONTENTS: fols. 1r â 12v Calendar; fols. 14r â 17r Hours of the Cross; fol. 19r â 19v Mass of the Virgin (ends imperfectly); fols. 21r â 81v Hours of the Virgin; fols. 83r â 90v Office of the Virgin in Advent; fols. 92r â 110v Penitential Psalms and Litany; fols. 112r â 145v Office of the Dead; fol. 146r â v Apostlesâ Creed (addition). DECORATION: Thirteen full-page framed miniatures with full acanthus and floral borders on plain parchment grounds at major text divisions: fol. 13v Hours of the Cross, Crucifixion with Virgin supported by St John, two soldiers, and skull under Cross; fol. 18v Mass of the Virgin, Coronation of the Virgin, she hands fruit to Christ Child; fol. 20v Hours of the Virgin, Matins, Annunciation; fol. 40v Lauds, Visitation; fol. 53v Prime, Adoration of the Child; fol. 58v Tierce, Annunciation to the Shepherds; fol. 63v Sext, Adoration of the Magi; fol. 67v None, Presentation in the Temple; fol. 70v Vespers, Massacre of the Innocents; fol. 77v Compline, Flight into Egypt; fol. 82v Office of the Virgin, Coronation of the Virgin; fol. 91v Penitential Psalms, Last Judgement with Virgin and St John interceding; fol. 111v Office of the Dead, Funeral service. ORNAMENTATION: Blue or red white-patterned initials [5 ll.] with foliage infill on gold grounds; gold initials [2 ll.] on blue and red white-patterned grounds; alternate gold and blue one-line initials with blue or red pen-flourishing; blue and red penwork line-fillers with gold balls in Litany; capitals highlighted in yellow. Parchment, gold, height, page, 121 mm, width, page, 83 mm; height, text, 70 mm, width, text, 44 mm, circa 1440- circa 1450. Flanders, Bruges.
