About this image

Image data

  • Illuminated Manuscript. Historiated initial from an Antiphoner. Production Place: Italy, Umbria, probably Perugia. Parchment, gold, 205 x 137 mm, three fragmentary four-line musical staves ruled in red ink and three lines of fragmentary text on reverse, circa 1325 to circa 1350. CONTENTS: Although the initial is fragmentary, the curve of the left shaft and the cross-bar suggest that it was probably an A introducing the responsory to the first lesson at Matins for Easter Sunday, Angelus domini descendit. This is supported by the fragmentary text on the reverse, alleluia allel[uya]…Quis est iste…citamur. DECORATION: Historiated initial in pale pink with acanthus on burnished gold ground: [probably A, 3 ll.] The Three Women approaching the Angel sitting on the Tomb.
