Illuminated manuscript. Cutting. Initial from a Gradual. Production Place: North-Eastern Italy, probably Ferrara. Parchment, gold, 289 x 237 mm, traces of musical staves ruled in red ink and fragmentary text on reverse, largely obscured by remains of a paper mount, circa 1480. CONTENT: On reverse, fragmentary text â¦ fra â¦; the initial would have marked the introit to the Mass for the feast of St Andrew (30 Nov.), Mihi autem nimis honorati sunt amici tui (Ps. 138:17). DECORATION: Historiated initial in graded pink and blue with scrolling ornamentation of leaves and berries on a solid gold ground, and border of painted leaves, flowers and fruit with gold discs and pine-cones: [M] St Andrew carrying his cross and an open book. ORNAMENTATION: Traces of an initial with voided red pen-flourishing on reverse.
