Rabbit: Kamejima. Gakutei, Yashima (Japanese, 1786(?)-1868). Surimono. Colour print from woodblocks, with blind embossing. 1830s. Poetry by Buntosha Morishige and Bumpukutei Mamenari, circa 1830-circa 1839. Ukiyo-e. Notes: From the series Ichiyoren Edo meisho mitate junishi (Famous places in Edo as the twelve animals of the zodiac for the Ichiyo group) designed for the Ichiyoren (a subdivision of the Katsushika group) whose emblem is on the back of the man’s robe. He stands with a geisha by the approach to Kamejima bridge, looking across Echizembori Canal towards Hashiki Inari Shrine and Enkaku Temple. In his hair is the short cleft stick with a folded square of paper available at Myogi Shrine at Kameido as protection against thunder on the first Rabbit Day of New Year. The poems read: ‘The mayudama the maiden holds over her head on the first Rabbit Day adds lustre to her willowy hair.’ ‘The fragrance of the plum floats as far as the boats at full tide; worshippers go happily to Myogi Shrine.’
