<note>
<value>Between 1858 and 1870 Solon was employed by the Sèvres porcelain manufactory and played an important part in developing pâte-sur-pâte decoration. He also undertook commissions in his own studio in Paris. This porcelain plaque may have been supplied to him from the factory of Alphonse-Marx Clauss, and after decoration have been fired by there. The plaque is signed 'MILES' a pseudonym made up of Solon's initials, which he used on commissions executed in his own studio for the Paris dealer, Eugene Rousseau (1827-91). The plaque must have been executed before 1870 when Solon left France for England on the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War. In August 1870 he arrived in Stoke-on Trent, and was employed by the Minton factory.</value>
