    <value>White earthenware, moulded in three parts and pearlware glazed. Painted in black, brown, blue, yellow, pink, green and flesh-pink enamels, and gilt.</value>
  </description>
  <description>
    <value>Three figures are supported by a brick wall, which stands on rough ground decorated with three hand-moulded clumps of vegetation. The figures are mainly white, with features picked out in enamels and gilt. The man stands, leaning on the wall, with legs crossed. He holds a black-handled spade and a basket of brightly coloured flowers, and wears a long jacket, knee breeches and waistcoat, with a black bow at his neck. To his left, the woman sits upon the wall supporting a young girl, who stands upon it. The woman wears a dress and apron, and a blue headscarf with brown spots over a lace cap. The child has long hair and wears a dress with a full skirt. All three have black shoes. The oval base is squared at one end and has a gilt line across the front. The underside is recessed and glazed. The back is not moulded and has a vent hole 11.5cm from the bottom.</value>

      <note>
        <value>The flat, un-moulded back indicates that this figure group was probably made after c.1850. Harding shows another example exists with additional painting in enamels and underglaze blue, which helps fix the date, since the latter was rarely used on Staffordshire figures after c.1865. Like many of these figures, this group is unmarked, and there were many manufacturers of figures working in Staffordshire at this time. However, the quality of painting on the Harding example, together with the hand-moulded &#x2018;parsley&#x2019; vegetation on the base, may assist future identification.</value>
