The book has a circular hole on the lower edge next to the spine, which leads into the interior and is glazed. The spine is blue, and the fore-edge and the clasps to keep the book closed are yellow. On the front cover there is a stylized cock surrounded by a rectangular border of blue scrolls with yellow spots, and red or green tufts. Within the border, across the top above the cock is an inscription 'Quand ce coq chantera/Mon amour finira' (When this cock sings/My love will end). On the back cover of the book there is a multi-colour floral spray surrounded by a similar border.
