The jar is cylindrical with on each side, a handle formed by an applied mossy-looking pad with short projecting stumps of two narrow cut-off branches. The sides slope outwards at the top to form a ledge inside to take the cover. On the front there is a white slip cartouche with an incised inscription, appearing brown, "Mr John Ellis,/Coal Merchant,/Minera./_ _ _". The cover is domed and has a handle formed by two crossed over branches. All the cut branch ends were dabbed with white slip before glazing.
