Shoki, the demon queller, by Masanobu Okumura

An image of Shôki, the demon queller. Masanobu, Okumura (Japanese, c.1686-1764). Print from woodblock in black, with hand-colouring and 'lacquer' (urushi-e). Kakemono-e, Signed: Hôgetsudô Okumura Bunkaku Masanobu kin-zu. Artist's seal: Tanchôsai. c.1745. Nikawa, sumi, coloured ink, height 623 mm, width 255 mm, circa 1745. Ukiyo-e. Japanese. Notes: Shôki was the Japanese name for Zhong Kui, a figure from Chinese mythology. This print has subtle hand colouring in pink and grey, and is an example of urushi-e ('lacquer' print), in which animal glue (nikawa) was mixed with the carbon black ink (sumi) and burnished in some areas to a shiny surface in imitation of the effects of Japanese lacquer ware. Acquisition Credit: Purchased from the Gow fund with the assistance of the National Art Collections Fund and the MGC/V&A Purchase Grant Fund.
