Maiolica. Bowl. St Jerome in the Wilderness. Maestro Giorgio Andreoli, workshop, Umbria, Gubbio. Shape 76. Circular with shallow curving sides; the base is slightly concave. Moulded with decoration in relief. The Saint kneels facing to the right, holding a crucifix in his left hand and a stone in his right. A lion sits to the right of him. In the background there are two hills and two cypress trees. The sky is indicated by blue stripes and lustre clouds. Round the rim is a border comprising a band of red lustre, two narrow blue bands with diagonal strokes between them, and a band of gold lustre. On the back, there are three concentric bands of brownish-gold lustre midway across the sides. Buff earthenware, tin-glazed pinkish-beige overall. Painted in blue and green, and with red and brownish-gold lustre, height, whole, 3.5 cm, diameter, whole, 16.0 cm, circa 1525-1550. Renaissance.
