Illuminated manuscript. Leaf from a Dogeâs Commission. Huntington Master. Illumination, penwork, parchment and gold, 219 x 149 mm, circa 1578 to circa 1585. Production Place: Italy, Venice. CONTENTS: Commission from Doge NiccolÃ² da Ponte (1578-1585) appointing Andrea Contaren (Contarini) as capitaneus Bergomi for ten months. DECORATION: Full-page oval miniature with kneeling figure of Andrea Contaren (Contarini) receiving his richly bound commission from an enthroned St Mark, with landscape background and Holy Spirit above, set within a full border of gold ornament with cartouche in lower border inscribed AETAT. XLV (the recipientâs age at the time of the commission). ORNAMENTATION: On the reverse, two gold initials [2 ll.] with gold foliate flourishing; the first four lines of the text and the name ANDREA CONTAREN are written in gold epigraphic capitals.
