I love classical studies more every day: they are my delight, and in them I find both my serious and my lighter occupations. I know – how well I know – that the pleasure obtained from lower pursuits rapidly vanishes; but the regret they leave behind is long-lasting. But labour expended on worthwhile subjects is quickly past, yet the memory which it leaves in the mind is a source of most enduring pleasure.” He mentions that he intends to “launch again into poetry” [by competing for the Browne Medal for a Greek ode] and ends his letter with a poem of 16 lines.
