Murray on fly leaf: ‘The story of Dorothea was announced for publication in the advertisement at the end of the 1st vol. of the “Earthly Paradise” when the work was to have been completed in two vols, and is the fourth story in the list which mentions among other stories in preparation: The Story of Theseus, The Story of Orpheus & Eurydice, The Fortunes of Gyges, The Dolphins & the Lovers, Amys & Amillion. Of these five stories , which like the present ms. were never published, only one, The Story of Orpheus and a fragment of a second are now known to exist. See Mackail’s Life of Wm Morris vol.1 p.208.
