Letter from the wife of the Austrian singer Johann Michael Vogl about Franz Schubert. The letter begins that as a 13 years old, when other boys would play in school recreation breaks, Schubert would compose songs. Vogel believed that Schubert  composed in a state of somnambulism and an incident is described to demonstrate this. The letter goes on to state that after being introduced to Schubert, Vogel was so enchanted by his tremendous talent he introduced him to all his friends. Schubert remained several years with Vogel separating when the later went to Italy.  On his return Vogel married the writer and Schubert came time after time to their house. She recalls it was an immense pleasure to hear him play his piano compositions. While Vogel had been in Italy, Schubert had returned to his former shyness, but  it was now possible to induce him to join the old circle of Vogl's friends and some other people of importance. He was praised from all sides but it seemed to the writer that this homage brought him little happiness, noting he started once more to withdraw from this general veneration. She recalls a comment by her husband on how quickly Schubert wrote. The letter concludes with an opinion that he was as insignificant as a man as he was significant as a composer.\nAlso includes letter from Paul Hirsch concerning the letter and its translation, together with 2 translations with annotations."}]},"identifier":[{"accession_number":"Gen\/V\/Vogl","primary":true,"type":"accession number","value":"Gen\/V\/Vogl"},{"priref":"110001554","type":"priref","value":"110001554"},{"type":"uri","uri":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/110001554","value":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/110001554"}],"institutions":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-149638","uid":"adlib-agent-149638","uuid":"7376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8"},"summary_title":"The Fitzwilliam Museum"}],"lifecycle":{"creation":[{"date":[{"earliest":1850,"latest":1850,"value":"1850"}],"maker":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-192987","uid":"adlib-agent-192987","uuid":"85bcd93a-2462-32c1-86f7-6a5f6aacf6e7"},"summary_title":"Vogl, Kunigunde"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-192988","uid":"adlib-agent-192988","uuid":"b1504ef5-1093-3a0f-a8e8-9ee21d4d9406"},"summary_title":"Hirsch, Paul"}]}]},"note":[{"type":"history note","value":"Item 441 from catalogue 86 of Elkin Mathews Ltd, Takeley, Bishop's Stortford."}],"summary_title":"Gen\/V\/Vogl","title":[{"value":"Kunigunde Vogl to Henriette, her daughter : Letter about Franz Schubert"}],"type":{"base":"object","type":"OBJECT"}}
