<value>Mario Avati (1921 – 2009), born in Monaco, was an engraver and book illustrator who initially worked in dry point and aquatint, but subsequently specialized in la maniere noire (mezzotint).
His subjects were exclusively still lives, fruit, flowers and animals, often with a geometrical approach, but frequently with a touch of humour in the title of the work as well. His demanding and delicate technique, and his attention to the effects of light, produced a velvety depth and richness in both black and colour, which contributed to the renascence of this graphic art.
His work bears some similarity to that of the Japanese engraver Kiyoshi Hasegawa. The arrangement of the composition of his engravings also shows the influence of Giorgio Morandi, of whom he was a great admirer.
Several of his engravings appear on stamps. His book illustrations include works by Brillat-Savarin (Aphorismes), Lewis Carroll (Chimera), Nostradamus (Des confitures), Villiers de l’Isle-Adam (Contes cruels) and G.A. Dassonville (La Perle).</value>
