<type>content description</type>
<value>1 sheet. Avati thanks Strachan for agreeing to write the preface to the 6th volume of his engravings catalogue, covering 1987 to 1990 and describing almost 100 mezzotint engravings. He expects publication of this volume to take place in the spring of 1991. He has sent Strachan the 5th volume (covering 1975 to 1983) for his interest, together with copies of the preceding prefaces. Photocopies of proof copies with some corrections are enclosed:
Preface to Volume 1 (1947-1954) by Jean Adhemar, Conservateur en Chef du Cabinet des Estampes, Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris
An evaluation of the early work of Avati, initially in aquatint (where his work is compared to that of Goya in Les Caprices) and etching, and later in mezzotint. He is comparable to the greatest artists in this field.

Preface to Volume 2 (1955-1960) by Brassai
The author follows the development of Avati’s art from engraving to mezzotint in this volume, where the early prints already show all the qualities of his future masterpieces, i.e. simplicity, sobriety, and total control of grey, from deep black to immaculate white.

Preface to Volume 3 (1961-1967) by Thomas P.F.Hoving, Director, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
The author finds that Avati’s images have a life of their own, they teach us to see, know and remember in a way we have never experiences before. “The word FOREVER comes to mind“.

Preface to Volume 5 (1976-1983) by Giorgio Soavi
The author analyses the nature of Avati’s use of black, which produces a personal twilight of supreme beauty.</value>
