<value>2 sheets, 1 folded.

Wright has intended to write to Hayley for some time, "but I find so much employment for my Eyes in the day with the pencil, I have no relish for the pen at night." He thanks Hayley "for informing the public of my intention of painting the Action before Gibraltar, which I find many little dirty souls are endeavouring to suppress by saying I come to late to get instruction. If it is published, pray say in what paper, for I can't learn that any of my friends have seen it."

Wright then describes how he has nearly finished a painting of Hero embracing Leander that Hayley saw in London, and writes how Josiah Wedgwood has approved his sketch of the Corinthian Maid "& has commissioned me to paint it for him". Wedgwood has also requested a companion picture and Wright asks Hayley for suggestions for the subject. Wright says he has finished Margaret's Ghost (see Hayley/X/53) but Wedgwood "dislikes the subject".

Wright describes how during his most recent visit to London he finally "got sight of the drawings of Gibraltar in a different point of view, but all independent of the Action for they were made in the years 40 & 44. That of the Action Mr. Whitehurst says was withheld, he asked for it repeatedly but there was no such thing to be seen."</value>
