Caroline Watson writes that Dr Johnson (the Reverend John Johnson, Cowper's relation), has visited and recommended that she makes no further alterations to her engraving of Cowper until she sees the original portrait. She asks if Hayley would be willing to send it to her, and also tells him that she is so "poor & wretchedly low spirited a being" that she "ought rather to be sent into a desart than admitted to social converse."

She also writes that "Events have lately happened to my family so unexpected and so marvellous that I could almost persuade myself the whole were fiction, almost turn sceptick & distrust the evidence of my senses; did not the painful sensibility of my own heart, convince of their truth."</value>
