She writes that Mrs Rose has visited twice, and "thought unfavourably of the likeness" of a drawing of Samuel Rose that Watson showed her: "it seems Mr Rose never esteemed Miss Greens drawing like him". However, as Caroline Watson throught Mrs Rose likely to have been influenced by this, the second time she visited, Watson showed the drawing to the Rose's eldest son, who accompanied his mother on the visit, and asked him who the picture looked like. The child correctly identified his father. Mrs Rose then said she would ask a close family friend, Mr Donaldson, to visit and comment. When he visited, Donaldson said that he would not have known who was represented in the portrait if he had not been told, as "it is intirely [sic] devoid of the expression which Mr Rose had", although "his little daughter who was with him recollected Mr Rose, & said it was very like him. Amidst such contrariety of opinion, where is truth to be found! However I think your decision upon so doubtful a subject, not to have it engraved perfectly right."
