Caroline Watson writes that after leaving "Miss Poole's delightful Villa on Friday sennight," they (presumably Watson and her aunt) "had a very pleasant journey to town". She delivered Hayley's letter to Mr Courtenay the following day, giving it to his mother Mrs Lambeth (Courtenay was away). She then called on Flaxman who was out of town, but expected back soon, and left Hayley's letter to him there. William Haines (engraver/printmaker) called and she was sorry to see him so ill. He admired her drawings [of Romney).

Watson writes that since returning to London she has been lookibng for new lodgings: "I find I cannot get a first & second floor in any situation convenient for me, at a less rent than four or six and forty pounds a year, a first floor with the use of a servant thirty. I lament therefore that I am under the necessity to decline the taking of little Fanny". The costs of "so charitable an act as the upport of an orphan" would "encrease my expenditure to more than I can afford".

She also points out to Hayley that "if you will please to reconsider the thing, I think you will see that the two characters of pupil & servant cannot be united in the same person. The steady attention which drawing & engraving requires must not be interrupted by domestick business."

"When I had written thus far", she continues "Mr Flaxman called in, he approved of the drawings very much." She told Flaxman that Hayley expected to see him at Felpham, but Flaxman said it would be impossible for him to visit that year.

Watson and her aunt thank Hayley "for all the kindness & friendship you showered upon us" and also send their "kind respects" to Miss Poole, and Watson asks him to tell Peggy (Margaret Beke) that "my coffee is not so good as what she used to bring me".</value>
