Caroline Watson writes "I am very sorry we wree prevented from having the happiness of seeing you & dear Mrs. Hayley again before your return into Sussex" particularly because Hayley was ill.

She has yet to receive a copy of "Hayley's Life of Romney", from Payne (the publisher), but offers Hayley ""many many thanks for your intention of presenting it to me.

She writes that "there must have been some mistake with respect to my writing to you relative to the drawing after Raphael [completed at Luton Hoo]. My aunt said that I must write to Lady Bute for permission before I could promise to dispose of it". Watson then explains that she copied the picture with the permission of Lord Bute, which was given "at the request of her Ladyship & upon her bounty my Aunt & myself live when at Luton Park. If therefore before any one of the prints is engraved I should ask leave to sell a drawing it would appear as if I designed to take advantage of her kindness to make a little ready money without an intention of making the engravings I told her of. This could not fail in injuring me in her opinion.. I entreat you therefore not to send me the 30 guineas until I can say to a sertainty whether it shall be yours. For it may be that My Lord will object to a copy being sold of so favourite a picture."

At the time of writing Watson is working on an engraving of the Bishop of Durham, and once she has finished she hopes to visit Luton Park again "to gain a little strength ... before I undertake my great work."

She writes how much she and her aunt value Hayley's friendship (and that of Mrs Hayley) "which we rely on as sincere. And we most sincerely wish you both length of days and every happiness that can attend the marriage state."</value>
