Caroline Watson writes with her thanks for Hayley's "kind letter of the 24th" which "has relieved us both from a great anxiety which out own fears had raised to distress us. And I with truth assure you that we never more will suffer a phantom of we know not what origin to torments [sic] us with suspicious dread that we have incurred the displeasure of our friends of the Turret." [Hayley's house in Felpham].

She writes that she is sorry to hear that his long silence has been occasioned by "the weakness of your eyes and the ill health of your friends", and mentions that she has "lately suffered great distress of mind both from the illness of Lady Bute & also of other friends." Lady Bute (Frances Coutts Stuart) has been advised to move to warmer a climate, and is "therefore going to embark for one of the Islands in the Meditarannean [sic]. And my fears presage that ... I shall never see her more."

She writes that she cannot dispose of the drawing from Raphael (of the holy family) that Hayley wanted, as, along with the other drawings she has made at Luton Hoo, she has to keep it "for Lady Bute against her return."

But she hopes to make amends to Hayley: "it is my intention to learn to paint with balsam, which I am told will bring a coloured print nearly to the effect of an enamel picture. One of the proofs I waill have taken off in colours for that purpose and paint it myself."

Hayley has asked about her current and future work. Watson writes that she is "restoring the plate of Cowper for Mr Johnson" and has two portraits to engrave for the publishers/booksellers Cadell & Davies. When she has completed those, she will start work on the Rubens and on "an Ascension of the Virgin after Murillo". She will refuse any other work, unless "you wish to engage me in any particular subject as that for Dr Johnson which you are so kind as to mention."

Watson and her aunt have spent three months at Luton Park, during which Watson "made 5 high finished drawings. She describes the Murillo painting, but says "my paper will not allow me to describe to you the other drawings now." But she hopes that the Hayleys will visit London in the spring so she can show them.

She writes that the "present season is very unfavourable to weak nerves. And very much affects my head & spirits. She and her aunt send their best wishes to the Hayleys.</value>
