Copy of letter to unnamed correspondent, identified as William Pitt the Younger as Hayley refers to an earlier meeting (when Pitt was 14), his recent entry into public life (Pitt was first elected to Parliament in early 1781) and explains that he is sending him a book (Hayley's "Essay on Painting", published in 1781) in which he "had occasion in speaking of Copley to introduce the name of yr noble Father" (the poem refers to John Singleton Copley's painting of the Death of Chatham).

Hayley invites Pitt to visit his house in Eartham, hopes he can congratulate him and "express my honest sentiments to you on this event without incurring the mortifying suspicion of Flattery from which tho I own it is a poetical vice I pique myself on being excepted.</value>
