Hayley has "just transcribed one of your remarks on Lalius into some notes to a Poem that I am preparing for the press". He then quotes from Horace to query whether Virgil was as good a friend as Melmoth has, in his writings, claimed him to be. He then thanks Melmoth for his commendation of two poems Hayley has published anonymously, and finally raises Eliza's concern that Melmoth, in his last book on friendship has ignored the writings of the Marquise de Lambert.
