    <summary_title>Miller, Lady Anna</summary_title>
  </agents>
  <content>
    <description>
      <type>content description</type>
      <value>Hayley writes to Anna Seward with a critique of a draft of her "Poem to the Memory of Lady Miller" (see http://spenserians.cath.vt.edu/TextRecord.php?textsid=34994), suggesting edits and adding " Courage, ma chere Soeur! you will convince the World, that an amiable Woman may be as happily immortalizes as the most gallant of Heroes, &amp; surely to give new Graces &amp; diffuse new pleasures round the circle of polisghed society is an Enterprise as worthy of poetical applause, as the bestowing new Birds &amp; animals on an Island of Savages, which you have described in so engaging a manner - I am very anxious that yr present Elegiac Poem should have the magnitude &amp; all the merit of its two predecessors." Seward had published her "Elegy on Captain Cooke" in 1780 and "Monody on Major Andre" earlier in 1781.

Hayley then writes that he would like to see the three poems collected "into an elegant elegiac Volume embellished by the pencil of my Friend Romney from whom I will procure you a Frontispiece...".

He concludes with a few sentences consoling Seward "under the mortification you so feelingly describe &amp; in which I may most truely be said to sympathise with you, for perhaps I am exactly in the same predicament - the author of Sympathy [Samuel Jackson Pratt] may possibly have printed a letter, [see Hayley/XI/2)] which He very artfully obtained from me, as He has done yours." He counsels her to forgive Pratt, as "I apprehend that poverty tempted him to make that unjustifiable use of yr letters, &amp; to Poverty much may be forgiven ... &amp; learn to look on a newspaper with the eyes of your favourtie Serena [the heroine of Hayley's "The Triumphs of Temper"] -- aftera ll, the Generosity of yr praise must do you Honour in the Estimation of every feeling Heart".</value>
