    <description>
      <type>content description</type>
      <value>Hayley writes praising Seward's productivity, and thanks her for "your affectionate sollicitude to assist me". She has sent him details of an eye treatment which she has used. He responds that "I dare not apply the plaister which you so warmly recommend to my unfortunate Eyes - our cases, my dear Physician, are very different". He proceeds to describe how his "present complaint is chiefly owing to my having too rashly ventured on many remedies..." and explains that if he stays "perfectly quiet I have neither pain nor appearance of disorder ... but the slightest Cold, &amp; sometimes a single Hour passed in writing or reading, &amp; sometimes even intense thinking alone will produce considerable Inflammation".

He next thanks Seward for sending a transcription of an extract from Erasmus Darwin's poem "The Botanic Garden". He writes that he longs "for the publication of the Whole, [the poem was published in two parts] it will appear most happily at present as a pleasing supplement &amp; as a worthy rival to Mason's elegant English Garden". However, he expresses (in prose and verse) envy of Drarwin's visits from/proximity to Seward.

Hayley next discusses Seaward's "Poem to the Memory of Lady Miller" (see Hayley XII/1 and 2), recommending that she tempers some of her more hyperbolic lines as they "may expose you to much raillery". He suggests a few edits, before concluding with some news: Romney has left Eartham, and has asked Hayley "to make a thousand apologies" to Seward for the "Failings" of a portrait (identified by Alex Kidson as a 6" by 5" watercolour in the Courtauld Institute: see pp. 299 &amp; 846 of "George Romney: A Complete Catalogue of his Paintings") that he has painted of Hayley for Seward (which awaits "a Frame &amp; glass from London").

He writes that he is returning "Mr Pratts penitential Letter [see see Hayley XII/1 and 2], &amp; I doubt not but you have been gracious enough to sign his Pardon" and concludes with an "Impromptu for yr Impromptu": 12 lines of verse praising Seward's ability to write comic as well as elegiac verse.</value>
