<type>content description</type>
<value>Hayley responds to Anna Seward's defence of four stanzas he recommended she cut from her "Poem to the Memory of Lady Miller".

He mentions that Romney is staying with him in Eartham - which is the reason for the delay in his replying the Seward's last two letters. He writes "but If I have not conversed with you, believe me you have formed the most frequent subject of our conversation, & we have been employed in your service - Romney tho He has neither oil nor Canvass, has made a little coloured sketch for you of the Poet, to whom you are so partial." [now in the Courtauld Institute Gallery: see Kidson, 2015, p 846].

Hayley continues by praising an additional stanza that Seward has added to her poem, and recommends that Joseph Wright should paint Seward in the character of "Elegiac Muse" ... "the Figure should be sitting in Virgil's Tomb by Lamp light & it would be worthy of the subject & the Painter".

Hayley asks Seward to thank her father for his letter and invitation, and thanks Seward for her "entertaining Epigrams (of which that on Cockle shells is my favourite)" and offers her "the copy of a few verses which I lately scribbled to Gibbon" (who "is soon expected here") in return.

He writes that "no Language can exprss how deeply I feel indebted to you for the tender sollicitude you have shewn concerning my unfortunate Eyes", recommends that she "change the jewish Ephod in yr Elegy into the classic Costus" and says "I long to see that Poem of yours to dr D" [Darwin].

The seal (in two pieces) depicts a woman playing a lyre.</value>
