Dr Martin during a robbery on Finchley Common in early September 1782, later discounted as false reporting. Hayley continues: \"I rejoice in the Idea of the Consolation you received from the seasonable Visit of our Fair Friend, that happy Compound of rational Vivacity & chearful Religion!\" (Mary Knowles) and writes that he is \" not a little Proud of the animated Praise, which you mutually lavished on my Work\".\n\nHayley writes how Sarah Betts and her grandson have both recovered from their illnesses, and describes how he was \"foolish enough, after a very hot and oppressive walk to indulge myself in a nap under one of the spreding [sic] Beeches, which you so much admired...\" and now has \"a rich necklace of Carbuncles - in plain English I have been vilely pestered with with a set of Boils succeeding each other on my Throat\".\n\nHe asks if Seward's \"admirable Portrait\" has reached her, and describes how he told Long \"I had packed up These Treasures of the Pencil, & sent them to our Waggon, I begged Him to prevail on the great Artist to take out of the Packing Box only the sketches which He wanted, & leaving the most valuable jewel at the Bottom of the Casket, to send it forward to sparkle in the Presence of yr delighted Father...\" However, he doesn't know whether \"this request has been complied with\", as Long has again been travelling.\n\nNext, Hayley responds to a paragraph in Seward's last letter about her friend Thomas Whalley which \"affected us [Hayley & Eliza] very sensibly -- it is a general Infirmity in literary Men to neglect Money too much\" and proceeds to both bewail his own \"full share of this weakness\" and praise Seward's \"marvellous union of irreconcileable excellencies\", which enable her to \"be at once at OEconomist & a Poet\".\n\nHe concludes (at length), with sending love to Giovanni (John Saville) and thanking him for songs he has sent Eliza, and wites that he is \"fighting my way through all my Embarrassments, & shall, I hope produce a publication in the opening of the new year that will in some parts at least, Surprize, & I flatter myself entertain you\" (this is most likely a reference to Hayley's \"Plays of Three Acts: Written for a Private Theatre\", which he planned to publish early in 1783, but was delayed until 1784 due to Hayley's decision to change publisher\/bookseller from Dodsley to Cadell, and the protracted negotiations which ensued)."}]},"identifier":[{"accession_number":"Hayley\/XII\/23","primary":true,"type":"accession number","value":"Hayley\/XII\/23"},{"priref":"110005508","type":"priref","value":"110005508"},{"type":"uri","uri":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/110005508","value":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/110005508"}],"institutions":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-149638","uid":"adlib-agent-149638","uuid":"7376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8"},"summary_title":"The Fitzwilliam Museum"}],"lifecycle":{"creation":[{"date":[{"earliest":1782,"latest":1782,"value":"1782-10-27"}],"maker":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-198487","uid":"adlib-agent-198487","uuid":"4dbae6db-a725-3bfd-b34e-5d215b1a85e6"},"summary_title":"Hayley, William"}]}]},"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"value":"2 sheets, folded."}]},"summary_title":"William Hayley to Anna Seward: letter","title":[{"value":"William Hayley to Anna Seward: letter"}],"type":{"base":"object","type":"OBJECT"}}
