<value>Hayley writes from George Romney's house in Cavendish Square, where he is staying.

He writes that Seward's letter to Romney (referred to here as "Tiziano" [Titian]) arrived yesterday when he and Long were with Romney. Both have asked Hayley to thank Seward " in the warmest Terms for many marks of yr kind Remembrance in the shape of Hare, Venison &c -- As to myself I have to thank you for diverse intellectual dainties, which I ought indeed to have acknowledged much sooner, but I have been much harrassed by my eager desire to finish my literary Business..."

He says that he hopes to visit "our Friend the Fair Quaker" [Mary Knowles], but hasn't yet had the opportunity. He has come to London with out Eliza, who is visiting her mother in Chichester, and "desires to be kindly remembered to you & Giovanni" [John Saville].

Hayley writes that "I hear nothing in this busy scene but universal Complaints on the scarcity of Money -- & particularly among the Booksellers" and explains that he has left his bookseller/publisher Dodsley: "our parting was by no means like that of two quarrelling Lovers vehement & passionate but perfectly cold & civil we shall never shake Hands again like Horace & Lydia --- He does not even know the name or nature of my present intended Publication -- which I wish to send forth in a month or two". Hayley is here referring to his "Plays of Three Acts: Written for a Private Theatre", which was not published until 1784 due to ongoing negotiations with Dodsley over copyrights to Hayley's backlisted works.

He continues " But I must haste to bid you Farewell -- my Eyes have suffered by gazing on the irresistible Mrs Siddons in Jane Shore -- she deserves all that has been said, & all that has been done for Her ---", and signs off with "the dear Painter salutes you with all good wishes so does Longinus. remember me kindly to yr Father & Giovanni..."</value>
