<type>content description</type>
<value>Hayley writes to check that Seward has received the pocket book that Eliza made for her, "& that your silence is owing to no painful cause".

He is writing on behalf of Long, who is starting to canvas for votes because "altho there is no immediate vacancy among the Surgeons of his Hospital, two of his young rivals have begun ... & their proceeding, they say, is justified by the very advanced age of Messieurs Pt, Crane, & Young, three Veterans of the Lancet, who retain at present the posts of Honor in St Batholemews". Hayley then explains how Seward could best be of assistance.

Hayley next asks about Seward's progress on Louisa, and whether "some Critical Remarks" Long sent "have answered his affectionate Purpose, intended to stimulate instead of depressing yr Muse". He then points out that "Criticism is like Physic" and "frequently produces an Effect directly opposite to what ... [was] ... intended".

In a postscript, Hayley mentions that Seward "will hear of some visits" he has recently paid "yr Friend the fair Quaker [Mary Knowles]"</value>
