    <description>
      <type>content description</type>
      <value>Hayley writes of how, on medical advice, he has been bed-ridden for the previous five weeks. "... a Friend of ours (an amiable Surgeon of Chichester) ... came, &amp; examining the Lameness, of which you have hear me Complain, &amp; which I have erroneously slighted as a flying Rheumatism, or some latent malady beyond the reach of art He addressed me with the following serious advice.-- 'My dear Sir, if you do not instantly take to your Bed for a Month or six Weeks, your Life must be very soon in the most imminent danger.- I am confident that yr disorder, instead of being rheumatic, is some accidental Injury sustained in the Gland of the Hip-joint - yr neglect of it, &amp; continuing to walk in Pain has produced great local Inflammation - the welling of the Gland has altered the position of the Bone, &amp; occasioned this rapid shortening of the Leg - if you continue to walk in yr present State, this evil must increase; Suppuration will come on in the joint, &amp; no power can save you.'"

Hayley relates how, at the end of his time in his "very commodious little Tent-Bed in my new Library ... surrounded by the demi Gods of Parnassus", he could no longer walk unaided, but was "a crutch-supported Cripple". He continues: "When I took to my Bed, I felt equally willing to live or die, as the Great Giver of Life &amp; Death might determine --- the latter appeared to me probable from a case that I had seen in this village very similar to my own - But lest the Fates should be very expeditious with me, I resolved to anticipate them in finishing a ludicrous Composition, which I had begun many months ago". Hayley is referring to "A Philosophical, Historical, and Moral Essay on Old Maids: by a Friend to the Sisterhood" (see https://archive.org/details/aphilosophicalh01haylgoog/page/n8).

Hayley concludes with praise for Seward's "delightful performances -- yr Verses to the new poetical wonder of the Peak, &amp; yr account of this genuine Poet of Nature are both enchanting -- yr poetical Picture of the Peak is equal to the grandest Landscape that I ever saw of Salvator -- Sargent &amp; I read yr Verses together with infinite delight -- We admired also the production of yr Friend, [William Newton] contrasting his propitious Lot with the cruel Destiny of Chatterton".</value>
