Hayley replies to Eliza's letter of 07/07/1792 (Hayley/XXI/64) congratulating her "most heartily on yr having settled yr route to the sea in a manner that will I trust afford you satsifaction & amusement in no trifling degree...". He continues, saying that he envies her opportunity to see Etruria (Josiah Wedgwood's house) and "you will see I believe our Friend Wrights [sic] picture of Penelope at Etruria which is I think for sentiment & expression the happiest production of his pencil". He next asks after Wright, whom he fears to be "like myself too much of an Invalide [sic] to be comfortably & successfully busy on works that require much mental Exertion".

He responds to Eliza's recommendation re making provision in his will for his natural son Tom: "Many Thanks for what you so kindly & sensibly suggest in regard to the little scholar whose future destiny I wish to be as free from Thorns as the chances of human life will allow. I will do what I can to shield Him from mortification & I trust his own good understanding & active Spirit will lead him to make a Figure in that beneficent profession where an accomplished mind & a tender Heart may find I think the noblest Field for Exertion & one of the best roads I know to satisfactory Emolumnet & to real Honour". (At this point, when Tom was 11, Hayley hoped he would train as a physician).

Hayley next writes that Darwin's poem "The Botanic Garden" will afford Eliza "great please - it is assuredly an admirable poem & its Beauties are so varied that I think the most fastidious of Readers must in the course of it find something to his Taste".

He concludes by revealing that his "late visit" that he had promised to tell Eliza about was to William Cowper, "But I will give you a more diffuse History of the the various delights it afforded me in my next -- at present an oppressive headach [sic] renders me peculiarly unfit for scribbling..."</value>
