      <type>content description</type>
<value>As there was no copyright law at this time, Beethoven
could augment the income from his compositions by
publishing them in several countries simultaneously.
This meant that each publisher needed a copy of the
score to engrave from. Beethoven usually employed
copyists for this purpose. In the case of the
Hammerklavier Sonata he was unable to call on his
regular copyists, with disastrous results: this document
is part of an 11-page letter detailing 115 corrections
needed in the London edition. Beethoven was so keen
to publish the sonata there as well as in Vienna that he
allowed Ries to choose among several alternative
sequences of movements, including omitting some of
them altogther.</value>
