These letters are mostly written by military officer Thomas Howell to William Hayley, Mrs. Hayley and Captain Thomas Conway. The letters sent following Howell's death are written by Frederic Porcher and William Burke. This collection comprises of:\n\n- Hayley\/VIII\/1-3, 65: autograph letters from Howell to Mrs Hayley. \n- Hayley\/VIII\/66, 74, 85-9: autograph letters from Howell to Captain Conway. \n- Two letters enclosed in Hayley\/VIII\/15, one dated 11 August 1780 and one dated 16 August 1780.\n- These letters and papers are dated from 29 December 1745 until 8 February 1794.\n- Hayley\/VIII\/4, 48, 91, 93-97, 99 and 105 are in OS1. \n- Hayley\/VIII\/67: address is given as the ship 'Ganges at Sea'. Howell describes his journey from Rio de Janeiro to Bombay. He describes the journey, a duel, his impressions of Bombay, the 'principal domestic' of a Major suffering from snake bite and the cure, amongst other things. The next letter (Hayley\/VIII\/68) is written from Madras and the letters that follow are sent from various camps. \n- Hayley\/VIII\/90: autograph letter from Captain Conway to Howell.\n- Hayley\/VIII\/92: autograph letter from Frederic Porcher to J. Middleton regarding Howell. \n- Hayley\/VIII\/98: Lieutenant Howell, account in duplicate, January 1787 signed 1793.
