<type>content description</type>
<value>This letter was sent by R.B. Beckett to the Fitzwilliam Museum's former Librarian, L.A. Holder. This is a reply to the receipt of the letter and transcript which Holder had sent on 13th February 1954 (see Constable/EL/6/21 and Constable/EL/6/19). Beckett recognises R.R. Reinagle as a member of the Committee of Arrangement of the Royal Academy of Arts (Hanging Committee). He explains the content of the letters to the best of his knowledge. The leaf has been numbered '20' by the compiler of the booklet. There is a black ink inscription on top, presumably by L.A. Holder: ''Acknowledged / 16 Feb. and sent / amendments to transcription made possible by direct reading after removal of sheet from album leaf'' (for amendments, see Constable/EL/6/17).

The transcription of the MS letter is below.

''
Dear Mr. holder,
Many thanks for the transcript. I am glad that the Fitzwilliam now has another Constable autograph: though it is presumed from the provenance that the script was a draft, not the letter actually sent.

It is quite an interesting document. It is addressed, as you surmise, to R.R. Reinagle R.A., who was this year on the Committee of Arrangement of the R.A. (hanging committee). ''The blight of my chief hope'' refers to the hanging of ''Englefield House'', which had been given a bad place in the Exhibition, & in respect of which Constable had already approached Reinagle , though without chances of getting it moved elsewhere. He also had three drawings in the Exhibition [an old farm-house, No. 639 (aa); A Miller's House, No. 645; and A Windmill [illegible], No. 647] to which the present letter refers.

Constable had been on the Hanging Committee himself in 1830, & you would be able to check the names of the persons he had helped from Graves' R.A. Exhibitions. It was usually for much {illegible] to be brought as members of the Committee to help their friend over the hanging of their works in good places.

Reinagle lived close to Constable's house in Charlotte Street, hence the last paragraph. You could also get the exact address from Graves.

There are connected letters (with notes) in the correspondence of which I have deposited copies in The V&A Art Reference Library under the titles of ''Constable & the Leslies'' and ''Charles Boner & the Constable Children'', but they only refer to the hanging of ''Englefield House''.

The amusing thing is that C. & R. were old enemies (after having once been close friends); but at this time R caused C more amusement with his antics than annoyance.

Yours sincerely
R.B. Beckett
