'English Landscape' or 'Various Subjects of Landscape, Characteristic of English Scenery' was a project undertaken by John Constable and the printmaker, David Lucas. It comprised of twenty-two mezzotints, and was issued between June 1830 and July 1832. A second edition was also prepared alongside letterpress text. \n\nIn his explanatory notes (see Constable\/EL\/6\/1), R.B. Beckett describes this page and Constable\/EL\/2\/MS36-1953\/9 as: ''8-9. Verses to follow title-page (I think those from Thomson, not in Shirley, came first in 1830, the other page in 1832 or 1833).''\n\nThis epigraph features three poems - by William Wordsworth, Virgil and Ovid. The second verse is from the Roman poet, Virgil's work: Georgics Book II, lines 485\u2013486. It translates to: ''Let my delight be the country, and the running streams amid the dells\u2014may I love the waters and the woods, though I be unknown to fame.'' The third is a quotation by the Roman poet, Ovid. \n\nThis page has been a part of a large brown binding (Constable\/EL\/2\/MS36-1953\/35). The sheet has been labelled 'ix'. The pencil inscription on the top right reads: 'alternate verses'."}]},"identifier":[{"accession_number":"Constable\/EL\/2\/MS36-1953\/10","primary":true,"type":"accession number","value":"Constable\/EL\/2\/MS36-1953\/10"},{"priref":"110009064","type":"priref","value":"110009064"},{"type":"uri","uri":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/110009064","value":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/110009064"}],"institutions":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-149638","uid":"adlib-agent-149638","uuid":"7376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8"},"summary_title":"The Fitzwilliam Museum"}],"lifecycle":{"creation":[{"maker":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-29619","uid":"adlib-agent-29619","uuid":"ef67fb8d-9a82-3301-9947-b8d0526effb3"},"summary_title":"Constable, John"}]}]},"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","units":"in","value":"11.15"},{"dimension":"Width","units":"in","value":"17"}]},"summary_title":"Letterpress Epigraph for 'English Landscape'","title":[{"value":"Letterpress Epigraph for 'English Landscape'"}],"type":{"base":"object","type":"OBJECT"}}
