<value>This is the letterpress essay prepared to accompany the Frontispiece of 'English Landscape'. 'English Landscape' or 'Various Subjects of Landscape, Characteristic of English Scenery' was a project undertaken by John Constable and the printmaker, David Lucas. It comprised of twenty-two mezzotints, and was issued between June 1830 and July 1832. A second edition was also prepared alongside letterpress text. In his accompanying text, Constable sought to explain his work. He did so because ‘many can read print & cannot read mezzotint’ (R.B. Beckett, John Constable’s Correspondence III, p. 108).

For the Frontispiece, John Constable chose to use a painting of his birthplace, East Bergholt, where ''his ideas of Landscape were formed''.

The leaf has been a part of a large brown binding (Constable/EL/2/MS36-1953/35). The sheet has been labelled 'xix'. There is a pencil inscription on the top right, perhaps left by E.E. Leggatt (he has left remarks on other material as well). It reads: ''-1st text-''. In his explanatory notes (Constable/EL/6/1), R.B. Beckett describes this and the following item as: ''20-21. Frontispiece: Shirley's D 7 and 8.''</value>
