<value>This is the letterpress essay prepared to accompany the print of ‘Spring’ in 'English Landscape'. 'English Landscape' or 'Various Subjects of Landscape, Characteristic of English Scenery' was a project undertaken by John Constable and the printmaker, David Lucas. It comprised of twenty-two mezzotints, and was issued between June 1830 and July 1832. A second edition was also prepared alongside letterpress text. In his accompanying text, Constable sought to explain his work. He did so because ‘many can read print & cannot read mezzotint’ (R.B. Beckett, John Constable’s Correspondence III, p. 108).

The leaf has been a part of a large brown binding (Constable/EL/2/MS36-1953/35). The sheet has been labelled 'xxv'. There is a pencil inscription on the top right, left by E.E. Leggatt. It reads: ''Unique / I have never seen another original page similar to this / (EELeggatt)''. In his explanatory notes (Constable/EL/6/1), R.B. Beckett (there are some edits made with pencil, possibly by the Museum staff) describes this as: ''26. Spring. Not in Shirley.''

A duplicate of this page (Constable/EL/2/1/22) is also part of the collection.</value>
